EARTH DAY APRIL 2009 We have Earth Day on 22 April 2009. A day to consider our impact on the planet we call home, which we have littered, burned and plundered for our own use without care or thought for the consequences of our actions on the earth and the earthling who share her. For many, it will be just another Wednesday and many more will simply ignore calls to stop littering, to recycle, to conserve energy and be more considerate.
The Al Gore documentary, seen by many, utterly ignores the biggest cause of pollution, soil erosion, deforestation and water usage, not to mention being a direct cause for insufficient grain for human consumption. There is another, relevant and essential documentary which is a real eye opener. Meat the Truth proves that livestock farming generates more greenhouse gas emissions worldwide than all cars, lorries, trains, boats and planes added together and the calculations used in the film derive from, and have been validated by, the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the UN (FAO), the World Watch Institute, the Institute for Environmental Studies of the Free University Amsterdam and numerous other authoritative sources.
One cannot ignore the very real issues of (excessive) meat consumption, especially in a country such as South Africa. The recognised and accepted protein (not meat, just protein) requirement for non athletes is .8grams per kg of body weight, therefore a 60kg adult requires just 48 grams of protein daily. In general, South Africans consume more than enough protein including peanut butter, beans, lentils and other legumes, grains, including bread and pasta and nuts and seeds, quinoa and spinach.
The single biggest thing we can all do that will have a real, significant and lasting impact on our planet and our health is to reduce or eliminate our consumption of flesh foods. How many of us will seriously consider even this minor change in our life?
FUNDRAISER MARCH 2009 Our recent fundraiser, a morning Tea held in March 2009, was thunderously successful, with close on 200 people in attendance and almost R7 000 being raised through the kindness of several sponsors, including Royal Canin and Tygerberg Animal Clinics, amongst others.
